black screen on the game? or on the computer, black screen of death ingame can be solved by a simple restart of the game, or using your friendslist to join a server that your friend is on.

CRC Errors usually mean corrupt files. CRC is just a check against the originating file - to the source destination. So in your case, if it's a driver, then you have a corrupt driver.

For a driver error, you just need to uninstall it from your Device Manager. If it's a file error, just delete the file and replace it. If the file happens to be part of a game, just delete the entire game, and let Steam re-download it.

From what you said above though - it seems this is a Driver error. So if you know what driver it is, then delete it and reinstall it. Also, you may want to go get CCleaner. It is a piece of software that cleans the crap out of your computer. It has a section dedicated to cleaning the registry. If you are running XP, and have been using it for some time, then your registry is probably a mess. Use CCleaner to backup the registry, and have it automatically repair the registry. Your machine will run faster, and perhaps your error will go away as well.

Hope that helps!

Ok, thanks for the input.

Get your Winblows CD out, put it in and be sure your BIOS is set to Boot from CD OR hit whatever key it is to get the boot choice menu (in most cases, F2 - but search your motherboard manufacturer out and find out what it is if you are not sure)... It normally tells you doing boot, unless you have it set to quick boot with the logo in place (rather than diagnostics boot where it shows you the drives it's detected..etc)..

Anyway, boot from your Winblows CD and (depending on the version of Winblows you have) select the "Diagnostics" tool. Run a diagnostic scan against your main drive.

I am willing to bet you either A: Have a dead hard drive, B: Have a dead motherboard chaing (IDE/SATA connection gone bad) or C: Have a corrupted driver that kills the system.

Either way, running diagnostics will tell you. If it finds no problems, then I would also do this:

Open the case on the computer, get a flash light, look at EVERY inch of the motherboard. A lot of times, heat will damage it over the long term. A resistor will go bad, and it will burn out. If so, when you open the case, take a deep sniff inside. If it smells like melted plastic, you already know your problem. If so, then you will need to replace your MB.

You can also try this: Ubuntu is free (Just search Ubunu in Google). You can download the cd and burn it. Once it's burned, you can use it to boot to a live Ubuntu OS. It will give you two choices, which is "install" or "boot live"... Just boot it "Live" from the cd. It won't install anything, but instead will allow you to be inside of an OS and prove a few things at the same time. IF Ubuntu will run - you have proven that your MB is fine, your HD is fine, and your memory is fine. Which will lead to the understanding that you DO have a corrupt Driver in your HD.

Since you will be inside of the Ubuntu Linux OS< you will now have the chance to attempt to fix any bad or corrupted driver via navigating your HD. Remember, you are in Linux now, so it can't run Windows bullshit. You will be left with doing this by hand. You may also want to grab an run AVG to scan the HD for viruses. A virus could corrupt your dirvers, or your boot sector.

READ THIS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!
If when you boot your computer normally, you get the BIOS screen, then it just goes black. I am willing to bet your HD has a corrupted boot section. In this case, just do the above (boot from Windows CD) and recreate your boot sector with it. There is some simple commands for doing so, that can be accessed by typing "help".

If all else fails, get my phone number and call me.

AVG is a windows program, not a Linux program. As far as I am aware, they have not made a linux binary version of any sort (but could have by now).

The games you have, are for Windows, not Linux. Two very different OS choices there. In order to install your games, you will need to put "PlayOnLinux". Just use the Synaptic Snap In manager and type in "PlayOnLinux". Install it. Then run it, and install the games while inside of it.

Using POL (Play On Linux) you can pretty much run just about any program. Some things will be glitchy, most will work. There IS linux binaries for the game servers, so I would assume you "could" run them as a local game. BUT I would think some things are left out, from what I see.

You can try to install them by using: (in SSH or Telnet or whatever the hell you decide to use)
wget http://www.steampowered.com/download/hldsupdatetool.bin
chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin
./hldsupdatetool.bin
./steam -command update
./steam -command update -game "thegamesname" -dir .

Those are the three commands needed to first get the tool needed. Then second, change the permissions on the file downloaded, and then extract the file. Then finally updating the srcds client. And finishing up with installing a game.

You will probably need to use "sudo" on all of this in Ubuntu.
